Tonight’s Episode: Low-Maintenance Do-It-Yourself Women.

Leave it to my daughter to come to me at 9 o’clock on a Thursday night and request that I dye her hair. But, of course, she didn’t want to go blonde. Even when she used to be the kind of blonde that caused women in salons to swoon (because they were paying three-figures monthly and still couldn’t duplicate it chemically), she didn’t like it. She even used to cry about being the only blonde in the family. (And when I find the video of that, it’s, like, totally getting posted on YouTube.)

Nope. No blonde for her. She wanted to steer her sandy-colored hair into a more decidedly mousy direction. Not too dark–she’s no emo or goth–just dark enough so that the word “dishwater” can’t be used to describe her. Mousy trumps dishwater every day in our female lineage’s lexicon.

Retiring to her basement geekdom to render some animation, she waited for the darkness to set in.

It looks great–and really makes her crystalline blue eyes sparkle. Next week’s episode:  Mom works up the courage to go red. If I’m lucky, it’ll make my washed-out brown eyes look green.
